Dhaka-- (UNB) – Managing Director of the World Bank Group Shengman Zhang arrives here today on a 4-day visit to Bangladesh at the invitation of Finance Minister SAMS Kibria.


This would be his first visit to Dhaka and is intended to further strengthen the partnership between Bangladesh and the World Bank Group in meeting Bangladesh’s development challenges.


During his visit Zhang will hold discussions with Finance Minister SAMS Kibria and other senior government officials on matters of mutual interests. He will visit Bank-supported projects of nutrition, micro finance, rural roads and markets, rural electrification and arsenic mitigation.


He will also exchange views with business leaders, civil society representatives and donors on the country’s development priorities and how the World Bank Group can best assist Bangladesh in poverty reduction.


Zhang is scheduled to call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on January 31.


Shengman Zhang was appointed Managing Director of the Bank in 1997. He currently oversees three of the Bank’s six Regional Vice Presidencies, including South Asia, the Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development network, the Human Resources Vice Presidency and the Quality Assistance Group. In addition, he chairs the Bank’s Operations Policy Committee, Sanctions Committee and Corporate Committee on Fraud and Corporation Policy.
